Wembley Champions 2018

Sunday 27th May 2018 will live long in the memory of our year 5/6 football team who not only got to play at Wembley in a national final but also went on to win the game 3 v 0.

The final was as a result of entering the EFL Kids cup competition which started with the club round at AFC Wimbledon back in November. Having comprehensively navigated this competition, we went to Oxford to play in the regional finals in March which saw us impressively beat Southend 3v1 in an entertaining final.

In the final we were pitched up against South Failsworth Primary School from Manchester who were representing Oldham Athletic and playing at Wembley for the fourth time. We thought we had done amazingly well to get there for a second time!

The weekend saw the boys stay in the Holiday Inn at Wembley the night before the game and also involved a pre match meal together and a game of bowling. After a good nights sleep, we were taken on a full tour of the stadium which included seeing both changing rooms being set up for the league one play off final taking place after our final. Following a trip to the press conference room and the royal box, we were shown to our changing room and were left it prepare for the final.

With the final only being 7 minutes each way, we knew we needed to start quickly and get at our opponents. We did exactly that and in a pulsating first half we scored three goals which included two devastating counter attacks. Ollie Swetman, Josh Lewis and Sami Holmes all got on the score sheet but the whole team certainly played their part.

The second half was a much closer affair but with us still having the better of the play. A great corner from Edward saw Ben head against the bar whilst at the back Charlie and Frank were keeping things tight and restricted our opponents to to one long range shot on target which Sam dealt with comfortably.

At the final whistle, the body were understandable delighted with their win and celebrated together whilst receiving their trophies from the royal box.

It was a well deserved victory and even more special to think the school have now played at Wembley twice and have won on both occasions, not conceding a goal on either occasion.

Congratulations to Edward Roberts, Frank Vigrass, Ben Vigrass, Charlie Davidson, Josh Lewis, Ollie Swetman, Sam Honour and Sami Holmes. A fantastic achievement!

A match report was added to EFL website and this can be viewed by clicking here.
