THE CLEVES APPROACH

We aim to produce well rounded community members at the end of the Cleves experience. We give the children a wide range of experiences which will enthuse and excite them and thus encourage high quality learning. We have high expectations of all whilst ensuring that every child has a programme that is relevant to ability.

5Rs

We believe that our curriculum should prepare children for life in a fast changing society. We place emphasis on the development of the 5Rs:

Resilience

Responsibility

Reflection

Reasoning

Resourcefulness

These are qualities that are important through life and they can be developed at home as well as at school and we hope that you will help us in this way.

KEY SKILLS

Our curriculum is innovative in that we seek to teach key life skills as well as knowledge. These are linked to the Every Child Matters strands and to the 5Rs. The children know which skills they are striving to develop in their studies and assess their progress at the end of session.

Click here to see a list of the skills and their connection to the 5Rs

ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT

We track children's academic development very carefully as they progress through the school. If we have concerns about your child's progress we will contact you; if you are concerned you should contact us. All children, no matter what their ability, are challenged to do their best and extend themselves.

We set for Maths throughout the school, making up 5 sets from 5 classes. These sets are not rigid but are reviewed regularly so that children can move if necessary. We assess the children regularly in the core subjects - English, Maths and Science. We also assess the children's progress in the acquisition of life skills. We value the development of the whole child rather than Key Stage 2 SATs results.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Personal development holds equal importance to academic importance at Cleves and you will see a total transformation of your children during their time here. Self esteem is key and we seek to develop this through a variety of activities and a positive attitude. We teach the 5Rs - resilience, responsibility, reasoning, resourcefulness and reflection - and we support all children through a structured pastoral system and assertive discipline approach.

SPECIAL DAYS

Each year group will experience several special days. Year 3 always start each topic with an Immersion Day and visit Wisley and the British Museum. Year 4 visit local churches, Year 5 have Tudor day, Isam day and visist Hampton Court and Year 6 visit the Imperial War Museum and a Victorian school in Guildford. We take advantage of special opportunities - Year 4 visited the Terracota Warriors this year and also have whole school special events - trip to the Royal ballet, Theatre trips and of course dressing up day during Book Week.
Other visits include trips to the Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking, a vivit to the IMAX at Waterloo as well as dance workshops and more recently a visit by an Apache Indian!

RESIDENTIAL VISITS

We run seven residential trips each year. Each year group organises a residential visit which is related to the curriculum.

Year 3 - Sayers Croft, Surrey - 2 nights

Year 4 - Hooke Court, Dorset - 3 nights, 4 days

Year 5 - Little Canada - Isle of Wight - 3 nights, 4 days

Year 6 - Preston Montford, Shropshire - 4 nights, 5 days
Year 6 - France, Opal Coast - 2 nights, 3 days

We run a Football Trip to Holland for Year 5 and 6 children and a Music Trip to Italy involving singers, musicians and Steel Pan Players. These trips teach the children to be independent and develop valuable social skills.

TOPIC OVERVIEWS

At Cleves we follow a topic based curriculum.  This allows us to link subjects meaningfully together under a topic title.  Year groups tend to have a different topic title for each term (although some are every half term) and the majority of work will be presented in a topic book.   Numeracy will continue to be taught as a discreet subject and grouped according to ability.  More detailed curriculum information will be provided on a half termly basis in the form of a curriculum map. THE END RESULT

We aim to produce well rounded community members who know how to capitalise on their strengths and how to address their weaknesses. We teach our children a palette of life skills which will serve them well in the future. We teach them to be active citizens and we teach them to engage with learning with energy and enthusiasm.
