Eco-Schools

Eco BinsWe are currently working towards becoming an Eco-School. The Eco-Schools programme helps schools to become sustainable and it offers three awards: Bronze, Silver and Green Flag. There is set criteria that have to be met before applying for each award.

The aim of this section of the website is to keep pupils and parents up to date on our environmental performance and to share our achievements and ideas with the wider community.

An Environmental Review of the school was conducted earlier in the term and two key areas were identified as targets for environmental action: food waste and energy usage. Our Action Plan outlines our targets and how they will be met.

The school now has an Action Team that represents each year group in the school; this team meets regularly to promote awareness and ensure that we are meeting all of our targets in the Action Plan. We also have a Green Team that serves as an extension to the Action Team and helps with fundraising ideas, presentations and designing posters.

Green News

October 2008

The children learned more about how to be environmentally-friendly in an assembly titled 'Looking after our planet'.

November 2008

Three members of our Green Team recently attended the Primary School Earth Summit at Kingston County Hall. The children presented a short play based on the theme of domestic food waste and a panel of experts listened to their ideas for reducing the amount of food waste in the home. The Green Team worked very hard on their presentation and it was useful to share ideas with other schools at the Summit.

December 2008

We have ordered two composting bins to recycle all of the raw food waste from our kitchen. Any fruit waste from break-time can also be put into these bins. We hope to have these ready to use in early January and the children will be responsible for collecting the buckets every day.

January 2009

We are making very good progress towards achieving our first award (Bronze). Members of our Action Team and Green Team have been busy designing posters to remind everyone in school to keep doors shut and to save energy in the classrooms. We have also acquired two large composting bins and these are being filled daily with raw food waste from the kitchen and any left-over peelings from break-time snacks.

We've done it! We've achieved the Bronze award and are now working towards the Silver

March 2010

We are taking part in The Conservation Foundation's - 'Great British Elm Experiment' and have taken delivery of an Elm sapling which we will plant in the grounds and monitor over the next 20 years!
