GRAFFITI
Cleves School’s continuing programme to expose their students to all areas of the arts, recently gave the
Year 5 pupils an insight into the world of ‘Graffiti’, through part of their ‘Through the Decades’ topic. They enlisted the knowledge and talents of graffiti artist Matthew James aka 'Phed'.
With over twenty years experience as a graffiti artist Matthew spent the day painting a typical ‘graffiti’ styled mural in the school grounds. This allowed all the students to come along and see a graffiti artist at work, understand the techniques used and get exposure to what has now become an accepted and popular art form.
With the mural finished, Matthew held a 30 min assembly where the students taught the history of graffiti and shown examples of ‘Graffiti’ from the pioneers of the art movement.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and Matthew left them excited and eager to participate in a competition he is running especially for them. The children have to create a 'tag'(nick name) for themselves and then produce a sketch of that tag.
The winning artist will receive a personalized canvas painted by Matthew.
Matthew James also commissions his work, designing murals to order.
